The American Academy in Berlin

The American Academy in Berlin was founded in 1994 by Richard C. Holbrooke and a distinguished group of Germans and Americans dedicated to keeping the Atlantic relationship strong in the post-Cold War era. The idea was prescient insofar as the political relationship was soon in flux, and a host of new global challenges posed questions for the relationship. For Holbrooke, the Academy would sustain the political and security dialogue while expanding it into the cultural, academic, and economic domains. Today, the American Academy in Berlin remains distinctive amongst independent research institutes in its commitment to bringing ideas into the public sphere as well as in its breadth of expertise, offering 25 residential fellowships annually to scholars, writers, policymakers, and artists. On its tenth anniversary, the German weekly Der Spiegel described the Academy as “the world’s most important center for American intellectual life outside the United States.”
